Ever wondered how photographs were made before digital and video? Jump into the old world of “hands-on” black and white photography – with cameras that use film. We’ll explore large format image making, shoot 35mm film, and develop and print our own images in a real photographic darkroom.
You’ll learn how to measure light, shoot “real” images that are not just zeros and ones in some cloud somewhere, process your negatives, and print your own masterpieces that won’t disappear after you turn off the power. Give it a go – see what develops!

When: Term 4, Week 1. This is an 8 Week Course, each Wednesday starting 11th October until Wednesday 29th November, 2023.
Time: 3.45pm – 5.15pm
Cost: $240 for 8 weeks ($30 p/w) – classes are limited to 5 students.
Bio: Thomas Sheppard is a photographer who works in both digital media and film. He enjoys showing the world through the selective eye of his lens, and has a preference for monochromatic images – although he sometimes works in colour. Landscapes are his passion, but he is also interested in the people from those same landscapes. His portraits show an observer’s eye for the human condition and an empathy with his subjects. Thomas enjoys the process of capturing the moment as much as the joy of the completed image. He achieves great satisfaction from creating images from equipment that some might consider ancient.
After a lifetime working in education across primary, secondary and tertiary levels, Thomas now enjoys passing on his knowledge and expertise through presentations and tutorials at club, conference and professional level. He is currently president of the Port Macquarie Panthers Photographic Club, and has been involved with the photographic world since the early 1970’s.
His work has been recognised at the local, regional and national level, and he has been published in national magazines. As an active local photographer and recognised Federation of Camera Clubs photographic judge, Tom continues to support, organise and develop photographic talent with interested and willing participants across many age groups.
All Wednesday Nest Workshops are available for all students from Mackillop College, St Joseph’s Regional College and Newman Senior Technical College – regardless of what school they attend. ANY Student can attend ANY workshop at ANY location, regardless of what school they attend.
Parents are to organise transport for students from school, to venue and pick up.
